Mrs. Caroline G. Nees, 82, of Calhoun, Georgia and formerly of Burlington died at 10:43 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Calhoun, Georgia.
Born April 28, 1931 in West Point, she was the daughter of Olive M. New and Erwin C. Helm. Caroline attended the elementary school in the park. She graduated valedictorian from St. Mary's High School in West Point in May 1949. Caroline also had the record of perfect attendance all 12 years without being tardy or absent from school.
She attended Western Union School in Crawfordsville, Indiana; returning to Iowa City, Iowa Western Union office for two years and then bid into the Western Union office of Burlington. She worked a total of 21 years for Western Union.
Caroline married Kenneth L. Herron on January 4, 1953 in the West Point Presbyterian Church. They divorced in 1954.
In August of 1956, Caroline married the love of her life, Ralph H. Nees, Jr. in Oak Street Baptist Church, Burlington. Ralph passed away August 14, 1994.
Caroline is survived by three children: Rev. David (Sharon) Herron of Canton, Ohio; Michael T. Herron of Atlanta, Georgia; and Suzanne C. Nees of Burlington, Iowa.
She has three grandchildren: Ashley Herron of New York City (Michael's daughter) plus David's children: Rev. Jonathan (Amber) Herron of Caro, Michigan and Andrea (Chris) Durfee of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Jonathan and Amber have a son, Josiah and a daughter, Ainsleigh. Andrea and Chris have two sons, Cameron and Ian.
She is also survived by her brother, Delbert Helm of Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
Caroline had been active in the GFWC/IOWA Burlington Women's Club for over 50 years and served on the GFWC/IOWA State Federated Women's Clubs Board. She enjoyed being on the Scholarship Committee.
The funeral service for Ms. Nees will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12th in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Kirk Bennett will officiate. Interment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at West Avenue Baptist Church following the graveside committal. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 11th in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
