Doyle Edward Moyers, 86, of Burlington, died at 1:12 a.m. Sunday, November 22, 2009, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born May 19,1923, in Des Moines County, he was the son of Edward Nelson and Ruth Alflrida Youngberg Moyers. On February 16, 1952, he married Mary Jane Specketer at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington. She died May 1, 1996. Mr. Moyers was a farmer, grain inspector, carpenter, and had worked at the ASCS office. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served with Company B of the 234th Combat Engineering Battalion, with the rank of Sergeant, in the European Theatre. He was engaged in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was of the Lutheran faith. He liked to play cards, enjoyed watching sports, and was an Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's sporting events. Survivors include four sons, Doyle "Bud" (Alma) Moyers, Jr. of Bakersfield, CA, Kenneth (Maria) Moyers of Burlington, Joseph Moyers of Burlington, and Samuel Moyers of Burlington; four daughters, Linda Hodges of Coralville, IA, Susan (Jeff) George of Burlington, Debra (Joey) Daly of Burlington, and Bonnie Moyers of Burlington; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Moyers of Burlington; four sisters, Caroline (Charles) Bailey of Keokuk, Ethel Moyers of Burlington, Mabel (Ernest) Haines of Fairfield, and Elizabeth Long of Lockridge, Ia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Moyers. Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Moyers will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with Reverend Carl J. Engstrom officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at the funeral home. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Hass-Thielen Community Room following the interment. A memorial has been established. The Hass-Thielen Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
