Obituary
Cornelia "Connie" Moorman, age 93, peacefully passed away on Jan. 7, 2014 at Bickford ALF, Burlington, IA. Born 6/27/1920, she was the daughter of Clarence (Doc) & Hettie Rider Johnson. Connie was raised on a farm near Belfast, Iowa, coming to Burlington to attend business college. She was an athlete and horsewoman in her youth and loved all animals, especially horses & dogs throughout her life. She was married for 59 years to Orlo Moorman who predeceased her in 1999. Connie and Orlo were well known business people & personalities in Burlington, having owned The North Hill Tap and The Hub/Towne House in downtown Burlington from 1947-2000. In his history of Burlington, Dan Bied described Connie as "beautiful as any Hollywood starlet". They were well known for introducing pizza to Burlington. The Pizza was based on a "secret" recipe that captured generations of Burlington families.
After Orlo's death, Connie kept the business going. She was a keen business woman, with enormous energy, strong work ethic, immense loyalty, and a heart of gold. A familiar figure in her dark glasses and convertible, Connie believed in small business and downtown Burlington. She had a million dollar personality and always smelled of Chantilly, her favorite fragrance. Connie enjoyed travel, loved the Western states and especially a memorable road trip to Alaska with her niece Esi. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her sister, Fern J. Burke (Mrs. B.) of Burlington and her brother CE (Bud) Johnson of Donnelson. She is survived by her devoted nieces and nephew: Nancy Burke Gilmartin, Joanne Johnson, Helen Burke Stueck, Jane Johnson , Janet Burke Schmid, Esi Burke, Bobby Burke and Bea Burke. Connie spent her final years at Bickford ALF in Burlington, and the family would like to thank them for the attentive care she received. Additional thanks are to her niece Esi Burke, who was dedicated to her care. Funeral Services are entrusted to Prughs and will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Prugh's Chapel. Pastor Jerry Rigdon will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at Prugh's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Des Moines County Humane Society or Burlington Notre Dame Foundation.
