John William Miller, 62, of Burlington, died at 6:52 AM Saturday, January 28, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
Born October 4, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Everett and LaVerne Hendrickson Miller.
He was a member of Grace Methodist Church. He lived on a farm near Oakville, Iowa until the age of two when his family moved to Burlington. He attended Perkins Elementary School, James Madison Junior High School, and Burlington High School, graduating in 1972. He also attended a year at Southeastern Iowa Community College.
Diagnosed at the age of two with a rare muscle disease, Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), John remained active until the age of 22 when he was no longer able to walk. His mother provided loving care for him at home until 2013 when he took up residence at the Great River Klein Center.
John loved hunting and fishing with his father, sports, puns, his nieces, and his many friends who continued to visit him regularly for over forty years. He was a passionate fan of the Green Bay Packers and competed in several fantasy football leagues, which he usually won.
Survivors include mother; his brother, Steven Miller of Iowa City; Steven's wife Ann Rhodes; their daughters Kathleen, Elizabeth, and Mary (Molly); his step brother Kemp Miller of Ames, IA; Kemp's wife Patricia; and their daughters Megan and Lauren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 PM Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church.
The funeral service for John Miller will be 1:00 PM Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Grace United Methodist Church with Chaplain David Plooster officiating & Reverend David Bracht-Wagner co-officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Grace Methodist Church following the service. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery following the luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the International Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Association (IFOPA). Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral service or a check made out to IFOPA can be mailed to International FOP Association, 1520 Clay St. Ste. H2, North Kansas City, MO 64116.
