Obituary
Fred K. Miller, 97, of Burlington, died at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born November 25, 1910, in Breckenridge County, KY, he was the son of Wavie and Effie Hawkins Miller. On April 3, 1954, he married Lela Sliger Schmeiser in Kahoka, MO. She died May 9, 2007. Mr. Miller was a quality control inspector at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 30 years, retiring in 1970. He was a graduate of Alexis, IL High School where he was the quarterback of the football team and won many medals in track and field. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles as a Golden Eagle and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed boating, bowling and woodworking. Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Powers of Fort Myers, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Susan Kenney of Burlington; one stepson, Stephen Schmeiser of Asheville, N. C.; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, his parents, one brother, two sisters and one grandchild. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington where family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Miller will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for American Cancer Society.
