Walter Carl Mewes, 93, of Burlington, died at 4:50 p.m. Thursday February 21, 2008, at Burlington Care Center. Born Septenber 5, 1914, in Burlington, he was the son of John and Dora Miller Mewes. In 1937, he married Cathryn Schiedman. She died in 1941. On December 8, 1945, he married Maxine Helen Gerber in Burlington. Mr. Mewes was a metal worker for J. I. Case Co. for more than 38 years until retiring in 1980. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 568 and United Auto Workers Local 807. He enjoyed woodworking, birds and playing cards. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dale Gail Mewes of San Diego, Calif., and Gary Mel Mewes of Grand Terrace, Calif.; one daughter, Marilyn Robert Clark of Knoxville; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Stevens of Burlington; nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, six nephews and two nieces. Visitation will be from 9 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, with family receiving friends from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Mewes will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington, with the Rev. Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
