Obituary

Maxine Mewes, 89, of Burlington, died at 3:50 pm Thursday, October 4, 2012, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born January 28, 1923, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John Clarence and Minnie Cecelia Peterson Gerber. On December 8, 1945, she married Walter Carl Mewes in Burlington. He died February 21, 2008. Maxine had worked as a secretary for J.I. Case Co. and for Northwestern Bell as a phone operator. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed playing cards and crocheting. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Robert) Clark of Knoxville, IA; one son, Gary (Mel) Mewes of Knoxville, TN; one step-son, Dale (Gail) Mewes of San Diego, CA; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Sister Mary James Orth BVM of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother John Gerber. Visitation will be from noon until 1:00 PM with the family to receive friends Monday, October 8, 2012, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Mewes will be 1:00 pm Monday, October 8, 2012, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the St. John's Cafeteria following the burial. A memorial has been established for SS. John and Paul Catholic Church..
