Obituary
Robert John Messmer, 84, of Burlington, died at 8:05 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2005, at his home. Born February 1, 1921, in Burlington, he was the son of John Jacob and Julia Margaret Ohle Messmer. On June 27, 1948, he married Kathleen Marie Long in Burlington. Mr. Messmer was an upholsterer for Chittenden & Eastman for 45 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of First United Church of Christ, and graduated from Burlington High School in 1939. He was in the Army Air Corp during World War II, and was a mechanic crew chief servicing P51, P40, P47, and P38's that flew bombing missions. He enjoyed camping fishing, hunting, fixing engines, and repairing household items, being on the Mississippi. He designed and built his own two-story garage. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Anne M. Witt of Burlington, and Susan Messmer-Shirley of Broomfield, Colo.; one sister, Marjorie R. Young of Burlington; three grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, and from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family wil receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Messmer will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by VFW Post 10102 & 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corp League, and AmVets Post 29. A memorial has been established to First Untied Church of Christ.
