James Robert Melton, 48, of Maple Hill, Kan., died Friday, May 28, 1999, at a Topeka, Kan., hospital. Born January 15, 1951, in Johntown, Ala., he was the son of Edward Earl, Jr. and Ardelia Martin Melton. On April 21, 1969, he married Sharon Weiler in Burlington. Mr. Melton worked for Landoll Corp. in Maryville, Kan., and for Tower Metal in Maple Hill as a fabricator. He moved to Maple Hill 10 years ago. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Burlington. He was a past member of the Teamsters Union. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Rebecca Melton of St. Marys, Kan.; two sons, John Melton and Star Melton, both of Maple Hill; his father of Woodstock, Ala.; two sisters, Joe Ann Valdez of Bakersfield, Calif., and Joyce Nelson of Galesburg, Ill.; one half-sister, Violet Lewis of Galesburg; one brother, Edward Earl Melton III of Albuquerque, N.M.; and one half-brother, Edward Earl Melton IV of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by one daughter. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday in Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The graveside service for Mr. Melton will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
