Hartley A. McPherson, 89, of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at his home. Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Croton, he was the son of William M. and Bertha E. McPherson. On May 1, 1943, he married Betty Augusta Lippert in Kahoka, MO. Mr. McPherson worked at Sheaffer Pen for several years, and also was a car salesman. He also had been a professional baseball player with the Chicago Cubs organization. He helped establish the first Little League organization west of the Mississippi River, and he managed the first Burlington Babe Ruth League championship team in the State of Iowa. He was a Cub Scout Master, a past member of the Eagles Club, and the Baseball Oldtimers Association. He attended Oak Street Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary Lee McPherson of Burlington, and Michael Allen McPherson of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn Mason of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Elbertine Kleber, Betty Hayes, Vera Mae Schleif, and Alice Jean Ray; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Prugh's Chapel, where family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. McPherson will be on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington, with the Rev. Gary Karas officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Oak Street Baptist Church and Great River Hospice House.
