Edith "Eadie" Mae Fortner, 91, of Burlington, died at 9:25 p.m. Thursday, November 26, 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born March 13, 1918, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Alva E. and Minnie L. Huppert Smith. In 1942, she married Robert L. Moehlman. They later divorced. On February 6, 1983, she married Richard L. Fortner. He preceded her in death April 25, 2000. Mrs. Fortner was an insurance clerk at Burlington Hospital for 27 years. She previously worked at Wyman-Rands. She was a 1936 graduate of Burlington High School, and later graduated from Elliott's Business College in Burlington. She was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church, a life member of Hetta Gilbert Circle, a member of Des Moines County Humane Society, and a past member of Burlington Medical Center Auxiliary and St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary. She worked at the U.S.O. in Sandpoint, Idaho, during World War II. She enjoyed antiquing, restoring furniture, and her pet cats. Survivors include one daughter, Pat McMurray of Burlington; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Parkside First Baptist Church. The family also will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The funeral service for Mrs. Fortner will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Parkside First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mashall Jackman and Tyrone Henderson officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Parkside First Baptist Church.
