Charles William McCandless, 97, of Burlington died at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at Great River Medical Center. Born November 11, 1908 in Nebraska he was the son of John Jasper and Mina Bryan McCandless. On November 30, 1933 he married Georgia Reaugh in Burlington. Mr. McCandless was an Army veteran serving until 1933. He spent several years traveling as a boiler rector for Murray Ironworks and retired in 1965 as shop superintendent He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1947, long time member of Des Moines Masonic Lodge No. 1 AF&AM, and a 35 year member of Travelers Protective Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming, berry picking and traveling. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Georgia McCandless of Burlington; one son, Gary (Vicki) McCandless of Burlington; one daughter, Joyce (Archie) Kavenaugh of Gladstone, Missouri; four grandchildren, Denise Dopler of Centralia, Missouri, Darin McCandless of Burlington, Brian Tieman and Eric Tieman both of California; two great grandchildren, Daylan Dopler and Derek Dopler both of Centralia; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
