Mr. Harold Franklin McAlister, 90, of West Burlington died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2015, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born January 5, 1925 in Ottumwa, he was the son of Charles and Hazel Irene (Belles) McAlister. On May 18, 1947 he married Bernice Rolf in West Burlington. She preceded him in death on November 15, 1987.
Mr. McAlister was a New London High School graduate. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving at the rank of PFC.
Mr. McAlister was a machinist at the Burlington Northern Railroad Shops for 34 years, retiring in 1986. He was of the Protestant faith and a member of the Machinist Union Local 531. He enjoyed all forms of auto racing and was a devoted family man.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Simpson of Ankeny and Jana (Curt) Daughters of Burlington; one son, James (Babs) Harold McAlister of Richardson, Texas; two grandchildren, Meredith McAlister and Gavin McAlister and four step grandchildren, Tim Daughters, Todd Daughters, Tara Daughters and Jessica Lesher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and son-in-law, Phil Simpson.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday.
The funeral service for Mr. McAlister will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 22nd, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. David Mixon officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
