Obituary
Norman H. "Bud" Mauthe, 90, of Burlington, died at 9:42 AM Monday, February 27, 2012, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born November 14, 1921, in Burlington, he was the son of Harry Fred and Frances M. Max Mauthe. On November 18, 1951, he married Leona M. "Lee" Hobbs in Burlington. She died May 10, 2001. Bud had worked at Chittenden & Eastman, Murray Iron Works, and was the owner and operator of Mauthe's Service & Garage for 45 years. He was a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School. Bud served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 where he was stationed in Okinawa and later transferred to Korea. He was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes football fan, and was a member of the "I Club", Isaac Walton, Moose, Eagles, American Legion, VFW, AARP, and Keenagers. In his free time Bud would be found playing golf or cards. He was also an avid mushroom hunter and loved to dance. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Donna Hobbs of Burlington; several nieces and nephews, Gary (Nancy) Haley of Burlington, Jack (Connie) Haley of Burlington, Wayne (Linda) Haley of Burlington, and Kenneth (Rita) Haley Jr.; and several great-nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harry Mauthe Jr., one sister, Dorothy Haley, and one nephew, Jerry Haley. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Mauthe will be 10:30 AM Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Reverends Jane A. Willan and Jacoba Koppert officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Hass-Thielen community room following the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Zion United Church of Christ, the Des Moines County Humane Society and Great River Hospice.
