Mr. Richard Mauer, 78, of Burlington died of natural causes Monday, March 9, 2015, at his home.
Born in Stari-Sivac, Yugoslavia on October 18, 1936, he was the son of Joseph Eugene and Margaret (Frick) Mauer. On December 31, 1955 he married Betty Carol Freed in Burlington.
Mr. Mauer came from Germany in 1950 to avoid the advance of the Russian army into Yugoslavia and was a 1955 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a self-employed brick mason for 62 years, retiring in August 2014.
Mr. Mauer was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, antique collecting, the Drake, making beef jerky and sausage and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty Mauer of Burlington; five children, Kristine Ann Mauer of Des Moines, Dr. Richard Curtis Mauer of Waterloo, Diane Kay (Bryan) Maki of Richfield, Minnesota, Gary J. (Kathy) Mauer of Grundy Center and Susan Marcille (Michael) Corpman of Newhall; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Lexie and Noah Mauer, Christian, Alexander and Tess Maki, Heather (Alex) Cue, Jason and Nick Mauer, and Brandon (Barb) and Jeremy (Leah) Corpman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, March 13th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. Mauer will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14th, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Kathleen Wohlers officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Messiah Lutheran Church.
