Obituary

Ernest G. Matthews, Sr., 58, of Burlington, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Burlington Medical Center. Born April 18, 1940, in Fayetteville, N.C. he was the son of Ernest V. and Mable Wood Matthews. On Oct. 28, 1958, he married Margaret Marie Hamm in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mr. Matthews retired after so years from the U.S. Navy, where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was a nuclear engineer aboard the USS Enterprise. He also retired from IES Utilities of Cedar Rapids and Burlington, after 17 years of service. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Burlington, and served for five years as church Bishop in Cedar Rapids, temple worker in St. Louis Chicago, was counselor for the church and was active in Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ernest G. Matthews, Jr. of Everett, Wash., and Jacob Matthews of Greenfield; two daughters, Delores Barthel of Iowa City and Kimberly McAfee of Independence; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Matthews and Robert Matthews, both of Lexington, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Edwards of Charlotte, N.C., and Esther Tina Davis of Lexington, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be after 8 a.m. Monday in Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Matthews will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints with Bishop G.M. Hammond officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
