Charles Edward Matsch, 82, of Burlington, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center. Born Jan. 28, 1917, in Burlington, he was the son of William J. and Emma Wiedemeyer Matsch. He married Marie K. Marzolf on May 25, 1940, in Nauvoo, Ill. Mr. Matsch was a 1934 graduate of Burlington High School, and a 1938 graduate of the University of Iowa, with a bachelor of Science degree in commerce. He was a certified public accountant, and was a senior partner in McGladrey and Hansen, Dunn and Co. for more than 30 years. He then retired to his farm, where he and his beloved wife, Marie, raised black angus cattle and grew extensive vegetable gardens and fruit trees. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Keenagers of the YMCA. He served as president of the Rotary Club, United Way, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, and Southeast Iowa Council of Boy Scouts, where he also received the Silver Beaver Award. He was an avid sports fan, and especially a loyal Hawkeye fan. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Ronna (Robert) Cline of Sheboygan, Wis.; the joys of his life, his two granddaughters, Carrie (Charlie) Green and Carna Cline, both of Madison, Wis.; three brothers, William Matsch, Jr. of Cherry Hills, Colo., Robert C. Matsch of Burlington, and Richard P. Matsch of Longmont, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Friday. The funeral for Mr. Matsch will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cementery. Memorials have been established for Bethany Lutheran Church, Burlington YMCA, and the Mississippi Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America.
