Barbara J. Mathiasmeier, 85, of Burlington died at 11:48 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born January 20, 1929, in Hannibal, Missouri she was the daughter of Earl R. and Bertha A. Ayers Cookingham. On March 23, 1946 she married John F. Mathiasmeier at Sacred Heart Rectory in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on August 22, 2003.
Barbara attended school both in Missouri and Ft. Madison, Iowa and worked in the office of Sheaffer Pen Company in payroll, until her marriage and then became a homemaker.
She was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church. Barbara enjoyed crocheting, crewel, embroidery work, ceramics, music (piano and vocal in early years), her family, and visiting with so many dear friends, both at home and those made from so many different states while attending conventions with her husband for so many years. Barbara enjoyed her grandchildren and all their achievements. She enjoyed good friends, good conversations, and good memories of both family and friends.
Survivors include three children, David J. Mathiasmeier and his wife Terri of Menlo Park, CA, Debra J. Shoemaker and her husband Dale of Burlington, and Michael J. Mathiasmeier and his companion Rose Lindo of Burlington; three grandchildren, Amanda Mathiasmeier, Alissa Mathiasmeier, and Cpl. John M. Mathiasmeier (USMC), and nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, one sister, Betty J. Cookingham, and one brother in infancy Earl R. Cookingham, Jr.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday, May 12th, 2014, with the family receiving friends 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel
The funeral service for Mrs. Mathiasmeier will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with Fr. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
