Harriet Catherine Barnes, 87, of Burlington, died at 12:53 pm Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born March 28, 1918, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Arthur and Ethel Smyth. From age 4 she was raised by Alfred and Myrtle Ihne. On April 6, 1939, she married James Elmer Barnes in Burlington. He died Nov. 17, 1994.
Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and helped on the family farm. She also worked for Jenny Coulter Day Nursery.
She was a 1936 graduate of Burlington High School. She especially enjoyed sewing. She and her husband cared for a series of foster children during the 1960s and 1970s.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Barnes of Burlington and Thomas Barnes of LaVerne, Calif.; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, and one sister and one granddaughter.
There will be no visitation or service. Per her request, the body has been cremated.
A private family graveside service for Mrs. Barnes will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Prugh Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
