The Rev. Robert J. Marshall, 90, of Allentown, PA, died at 1:47 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2008, in Allentown. Born August 26, 1918, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert and Margaret Marshall. On February 6, 1943, he married Alice Hepner in Chicago. She died October 30, 1998. The Rev. Marshall was former president of the Lutheran Church in America, o The Rev. Robert J. Born August ne of the predecessor church bodies of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and former president of the Illinois Synod. He served as Senior Associate at Center for Global Mission of the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. He served as president of Lutheran World Relief and was a member of the board of directors, president of Church World Service and vice-chairman of the Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid in USAID. He served as finance moderator of World Council of Churches, vice president of Lutheran World Federation, and on the boards of several colleges, hospitals and social service agencies. He was former professor of Old Testament at Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S. C., and senior pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Alhambra, California. He wrote "The Mighty Acts of God" and several publications. The Rev. Marshall was a graduate of Burlington Community College, Wittenberg University and Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. He earned a Ph.D. at University of Chicago and received 15 honorary doctorates and several awards of commendation. Survivors include one son, Robert E. Marshall of Voorhees, N.J.; one daughter, Peggy Niederer of New Milford, N.J.; one sister, Dorothy Fisher of Moline, Ill.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one grandchild and his parents. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington. The funeral for the Rev. Robert J. Marshall will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Revs. Peggy Niederer and Carl Engstrom officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Chicago, 1100 East 55th St., Chicago, Ill. 60615, designated for the Robert J. Marshall Graduate Fellowship.
