Margaret “Maggie” C. Read, 94, formerly of Burlington died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at Marie
Steiner Kelting Hospice Home in Chaska, Minn.
Born Nov. 8, 1921, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Andrew and Laura Andersen. She
married Charles Cooper in 1943; he died in 1975. She married Lloyd Brueck in 1977; he died in
1978. She married Tom Read in 1983. He died in 1997.
Mrs. Read was a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School. She worked for the Burlington School
District for 20 years: 10 years as treasurer of the high school and 10 years in district purchasing.
She moved to Marion in 1997, then to Minneapolis in 2015 to be closer to family.
She had many passions over the years, especially tennis, bridge, her family and cheering for the
Iowa Hawkeyes and the New York Yankees. She was a member of PEO Chapter KJ and CR
Presbyterian Church, and was a 75year member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, where
she served as an elder. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who always looked on
the bright side.
Survivors include one son, John Cooper of Chanhassen, Minn.; one daughter, Molly Mount of Bend
Ore.; two grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; one stepson, Tom Read of Cedar Rapids; two
stepgrandchildren; one brother, John Andersen of Geneva, Ill.; two sisters, Irene Peale of Sarasota,
Fla., and Mary Ann Purcell of Norman, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant daughter, two brothers and three sisters.
A celebration of life for Mrs. Read will be 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington,
with a luncheon and visitation to follow. A private graveside service will be in Aspen Grove
Cemetery. Per her request, cremation has been accorded.
Memorials have been established for the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library (MBTBL) and
Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice House
