George E. Manley, 89, passed away at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 209. He was born September 27, 1919, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of George Washington and Gertrude Lathrop Manley. He married Erma J. Adams on September 9, 1939, who preceded him in death on November 5, 1979. He married Laura Hammond Kroeger on November 10, 1984, in Burlington, Iowa. She survives. The World War II Navy veteran was a custodian for the Burlington Community School District, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Alton and a life member of VFW Post 10102 in Burlington. In addition to his wife, Laura, survivors include one son, Stephen Manley of Albuquerque, N M; one daughter and son-in-law Linda and Richard Chatfield of Elkhart, Ind.; stepson and wife, Richard and Ellen Kroeger of Apex, N C; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Carta of East Alton; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Maynard and Verla Manley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Gerald and Norma Manley of Fairfield, Iowa. In addition to his first wife, Erma, he was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson; two brothers, and five sisters. Visitation will be from 9:30 until time of services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. The Rev. Andre Dobson will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 18, at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church. Paynic Home for Funerals, Rosewood Heights, is in charge of arrangements.
