Obituary
On the afternoon of January 30, 2017, Lyle passed away after a year long battle with cancer; while being attended by familiar staff members at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA. Lyle was 73 years old.
Lyle Magneson was born in the town of Villisca in Montgomery County, Iowa on July 1, 1943. He was the third child, and the third son, of Frances A. Levine and Ivan C. Magneson.
Lyle was raised in Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1961. Lyle moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1973 where he owned the shoe department at Schrams Department Store. On August 31, 1979, Lyle married Linda K. Kiene who had two children, Shawn and Shantel Kiene, when they met. Together they raised their two children in Burlington, while Lyle remained very civic minded. Lyle was Protestant and a long time member of the Harmony Bible Church in Danville, IA. Lyle enjoyed spending time with friends and sharing his knowledge of Burlington history, where he was able to contribute greatly. He also loved his annual hunting trips.
Lyle was a charter member and past president of the Burlington/West Burlington Optimists Club. He also served as the Governor of the Iowa District of Optimist International. Lyle was the past President of the Des Moines County Historical Society. He received the Governor's award from the State of Iowa. He was the Iowa Optimist of the year in 1976-77. Lyle served as president, vice-president, treasurer, unofficial historian and was on the board of directors for the Burlington Steamboat Days Incorporated. He was once recognized as the Grand Marshal and Historian for Steamboat Days. He was a chairman of the Burlington Area Crime Stoppers and the Port of Burlington Committee. He was a member of the Des Moines County Genealogical Society, the Friends of the Library group, Lee County Historical Society and the Heritage Trust. Lyle donated 297 pints of blood to the Mississippi Valley Blood Bank, 280 of 297 were for blood platelets.
Lyle is survived by son, Shawn Kiene, wife Julie, 6 children and 2 grandchildren of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughter, Shantel (Kiene) Winger, husband Dan, 3 children of Altadena, CA; daughter, Elizabeth (Magneson) Kamp, husband Eric, 3 children of Grimes, IA; son, Gary Magneson, wife Kristi , 2 children of Urbandale, IA; brothers, Keith Magneson, wife Twyla of Prairie Village, KS, and Duane Magneson of Red Oak, IA; friend, Judy Stevens and her family. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and too many friends to count.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Shirley Ann Magneson.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division Street.
The funeral service for Mr. Magneson will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 6, 2017, at Harmony Bible Church with Pastor Dan Dingus officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the service. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
Memorials have been established for the Optimist International Foundation, Des Moines County Historical Society, Great River Hospice House, and the Des Moines County Special Needs Foundation.
