Mr. Steven Sergey Hoth, 76, of Burlington died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Great River Medical Center.
Born January 30, 1941 in Oelwein, Iowa, he was the son of Donald L. and Ina (Barr) Hoth. On July 29, 1967 he married JoEllen Maly in Cedar Rapids.
Steve was a 1958 graduate of Lamont, Iowa High School, 1962 graduate of Grinnell College and a 1966 graduate of University of Iowa Law School.
Prior to his law career, which spanned more than 50 years, Steve was a teacher in Africa for a year. Besides his private practice, Steve clerked for the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, served as Des Moines County Attorney, was past president of the Burlington School Board, started the Burlington Junction Railroad and continued to manage the family farms.
Steve was a member of First Congregational Church and served as the moderator for the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches. He also was a 50 year member of the American Bar Association, member and past president of Crystal Lake Club, active member of Burlington Rotary Club, and a 50 year member of the American Numismatic Association.
Steve enjoyed vacations with his family in Florida and collecting stamps and coins. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially fishing and duck hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. JoEllen Hoth of Burlington; two sons, Andrew (Katherine) Hoth of Burlington and Peter (Karin) Hoth of Iowa City; six grandchildren, David, Noah, Gretta, Caleb, Tyler, and Aubrey; and one sister, Sandra Hoth of Port Wing, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Monday, May 22nd, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m.
The funeral service for Steve will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23rd, at First Congregational Church with the Rev. James Francisco officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First Congregational Church.
