Ruth J. Lyons, 88, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 10:27 p.m.
Born on January 29, 1923 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harry and Florence Bessie Porter Simon. She married George Edward Lyons on January 25, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on November 25, 2005.
Ruth graduated from Burlington High School in 1940. She was a Clinic Clerk at North Hill School and then Oak Street School for 29 years. She was also a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell and a homemaker.
She considered her family as her most precious possession and she loved them dearly. Her favorite hobbies were camping and fishing, especially at Lake Wapello. It was not uncommon to find her fishing for hours at a time. She was a member of Excelsior Circle of Kings Daughters. She enjoyed making the various items that the Circle produced for hospital inpatients and nursing home residents. She also enjoyed yard work, gardening and crafts. She was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Dr. Dean P. (Coleen) Lyons of Burlington, Iowa; two daughters, Dianne K. (Dr. James) Ruggles of Stockton, California and Debra J. Lyons of Lakewood, Colorado; one sister, Helen VanderHamm of Fairfield, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Jason & Erin Ruggles and Sean, Christopher & Amanda Lyons; 2 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandsons, and 3 step-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one brother, Robert Simon; one sister, Virginia Simon; and one son, Lawrence Lyons.
Funeral services for Ruth J. Lyons will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Parkside First Baptist Church, Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
Friends may call at Prugh’s Chapel after 8:00 a.m. Friday with the family receiving friends on Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established for Parkside First Baptist Church.
