Morton P. Jones, age 75 of Burlington passed away at 3:50 PM Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Parkview Care Center. Morton Jones was born in Pleasant Grove, Iowa on September 26, 1926 and was the son of Percy and Vallie Ford Hallinger Jones. Morton attended several schools in southeast Iowa and graduated from Lockridge High School. After high school, Mort was drafted into the Army. He toured Japan and Korea and his tour of duty was up prior to the Korean War. Being a veteran, Mort was a former member of the VFW. For work Mort did ‘a little bit of everything’. Most of his work experience consisted of driving a truck locally. He retired from Lehigh-Leopold. He also used to enjoy fishing, hunting and shooting pool and had a very deep love for the Mississippi River. When asked what he liked to hunt, Morton replied, “squirrel, rabbit, deer, and pheasant.” He especially liked pheasant hunting in Marshalltown. Mort enjoyed his friends, family and his life on the river. He touched many lives and will live on in many wonderful memories. Morton was the youngest of eight children, including six sisters, Ruth. Alma, Emily, June, Vivian, Janice and one brother Karl. He shared is life with his long time friend Orvilla Lyons and her family. Survivors include his long time friend Orvilla Lyons and her family; one brother, Karl; six sisters, Ruth, Alma, Emily, June, Vivian, and Janice and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. There will be no visitation. The Private Family Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Jones will be Tuesday, September 3, at the Aspen Grove Cemetery. Mr. John Lyons will facilitate. A memorial has been established to the Burlington Area Homeless Shelter. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
