Obituary
Walter J. Lutenegger, 79, of Burlington, died at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center. Born May 26, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Albin J. and Josephine Kozurek Lutenegger. He married Alice F. Ruschill on June 19, 1946. Mr. Lutenegger was a 1938 graduate of Burlington High School, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He served aboard the USS Oklahoma, and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He also served on the USS Lexington and the USS Massachusetts. His commendations include the Purple Heart with cluster, Battle of Casablanca, Morocco, Battle of Palua Islands, Invasion of Guam, and Pearl Harbor Memorial, Des Moines. He participated in numerous air attacks and combat actions. He worked for the Burlington Northern and CB&Q railroads, and retired after 33 years at the West Burlington Railroad Shops. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, USS Oklahoma Association, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9162. He served on the Board of Directors of Burlington Northern Mainliners Club, was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and served as Past President of the Local IBEW. Survivors include his wife; one son, Donald Lutenegger of Whippony, N.J.; two grandsons; one sister, Margaret C. Molyneaux of Davenport; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The graveside committal service for Mr. Lutenegger will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetry, with the Rev. Gerald Hoenig officiating. Military honors will be conduced by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162. A memorial has been established.
