Joel E. Kipp, 62, of Burlington, died Monday, June 23, 2014, at his home.
Born September 19, 1951, in Fort Madison, IA, he was the son of James Fredrick and Geraldine Frances Carter Kipp. On September 4, 1971, he married Patty A. Long in West Burlington.
Joel founded Musician's Pro Shop & School of Music in 1973 and was the owner and operator along with his wife, Patty.
He was a 1969 graduate of Burlington High School, and attended Southeastern Community College. He received his certification from the Recording School of Ames, IA.
He was dedicated to music and helping others make music. At age 15 he began playing in the Macabra's, and later also played in the Fortune Bros, Willi Dee and the Bobcats, Smokey Ridge, Durango, Human Reaction, Not Dead Yet, and Cross Roads. He played many different instruments and loved singing harmony and composing music. In 2012, he was an Inductee in the Iowa Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. The only thing he loved more than music was his family. He was very proud of his sons and grandsons and the love of his life Patty.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brian Kipp of Burlington, and James (Jessi) Kipp of Coralville, IA; two grandsons, Maxwell Kipp, and Griffin Kipp, one sister, Kathleen (Bryce) Robertson of Quincy, IL; one sister-in-law, Nancy (Craig) Sirois of Ft. Madison; and nieces and nephews, Casey Cook, Erin Scott, Andy Sirois, and Nick Robertson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
The funeral service for Mr. Kipp will be 10:00 AM Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Marshall Jackman officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
