Grace E. Lohmann, 98, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at Westhaven Community Center in Boone, Iowa where she lived for the past 5 years.
Born December 11, 1918 in rural Des Moines County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Henry and Dorothy Hansen Lohmann.
She was a registered nurse and worked for the Iowa Department of Public Health in the regional office in Washington, Iowa for 27 years before her retirement in 1981. She was a Navy nurse veteran of World War II, serving at the U.S. naval hospitals in Long Beach, CA and in Samar, Philippines.
She graduated from Burlington High School in 1936, from Burlington Junior College in 1938, and from the Burlington Protestant Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. Following her military service, she received a degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Peace Lutheran Church for many years and was a member of their afternoon circle group. She belonged to the Jane Delano Nurses Association in Burlington prior to her move to Des Moines in 2005.
She is survived by nieces, Janice (Mark) Young and Joyce (Jon) Bahrenfus, and nephew, Jim (Pam Bahr) England.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Kenneth Lohmann, and her sister, Evelyn England.
A graveside service and burial of her cremains will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 28 in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Kathleen Wohlers officiating. A luncheon will follow at Peace Lutheran Church for family and friends.
