Walter Lee Lippert, 84, of Burlington, died at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Bickford Cottage in Burlington. Born October 2, 1924, in Burlington, he was the son of William Frederick and Hattie Cynthia Trobee Lippert. On August 27, 1950, he married Isabel Ann Thomas in Burlington. Mr. Lippert was a switchman, then was promoted to yardmaster for CB&Q Railroad, where he worked for 33 years. He retired in 1985 from Burlington Northern Railroad. He served in the Army Air Force, fought in the Western Pacific Theater, and flew 40 bombing missions over enemy territory during World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroic measures. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the church choir, was a deacon, and was active in GEMS. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and United Transportation Union. He enjoyed attending Air Force Crew reunions. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Thomas Lee Lippert of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Charles Walter Lippert of Roeland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Butler and Betty McPherson, both of Burlington; one brother, Donald Lippert of Burlington; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers. Visitation will be from noon to 7:30 p.m. today at Prugh's Chapel, where family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Private burial with military rites by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The memorial service for Mr. Lippert will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Deb Miller-Kinney officiating. Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church and Great River Hospice House.
