Morris “Honey” Lewis Jr., 71, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away at his home on Saturday morning, May 24, 2014 after a courageous battle of small cell carcinoma.
Born on February 27, 1943 in Luxora, Arkansas, he was the son of Morris and Lessie Garrett Lewis Sr. He married Gail Ann Galbreath on July 17, 1993 in Keokuk, Iowa.
Morris was the 6th child of 21 children. He was a brake press operator at GE and retired from there in 2002. “Honey” enjoyed time with his wife and family, church, fishing, gardening, his pet Reba Mae, blues and gospel music, watching wrestling, basketball, football (especially the Pittsburgh Steelers) and TV. He was a member of Hope Temple Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Gail; three daughters, Deanna (Jermill Heath) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Cassie Bradford and Kimberly (Derek) Clay, both of Burlington, Iowa; two step-daughters, Tia (Tim Wilson) Dumas and Tomekia (John) Hadaway, both of Keokuk, Iowa; two sons, Darren Lewis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Tyson Robinson of Des Moines, Iowa.
Grandchildren, Crashay Lewis of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Davion Lewis of Burlington, Iowa, KeiShawn Clegg, Marcus Clegg Jr. and Jeniah Heath, all of Milwuakee, Wisconsin, Zydacia Bradford, Zyana Bradford, Zytez Bradford, Jazlyn Boyd and Jaia Boyd, all of Burlington, Iowa, Payton Baldwin, Montana Wilson. Leo Wilson, Jazz Asbury, Zackariah Asbury, all of Keokuk, Iowa, Amelio Lewis, Carmelo Lewis, Amelio Lewis Jr., Mamaya Lewis and Keisha Lewis, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Eight great-grandchildren, Oshae Lewis, Sanai Lewis, Ta’Ziya Freeman, all of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Zoey Asbury of Keokuk, Iowa, Kweli, Kwinpon, Kwiprel and Dominique Lewis, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Eight brothers, Joe (Joyce) Lewis of Maywood, Illinois, Thomas (ErmaLinda) Lewis of Sterling, Illinois, Willie Lewis of Ottumwa, Iowa, L.C. (Sherry) Lewis of Burlington, Iowa, James (Sharon) Lewis of Burlington, Iowa, Jerome (Mary Kay) Lewis of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Earl (Sherry) Lewis of Burlington, Iowa and Raymond (Loretta) Lewis of Burlington, Iowa.
Seven sisters, Magnolia Davis and Maggie Lewis, both of Burlington, Iowa, Parlee Taylor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rosie Cratton and Joann Lewis, both of Burlington, Iowa, Louise (Ronnie) Stinson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Lutrice Lewis of Burlington, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Donna (Louis) Robbin of Warsaw, Illinois, Lorraine (Obion) Perkins of Long Beach, California and Joanna Galbreath of Broadview, Illinois; and a blessed number of nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, O.W., John, L.V. and Fred Lewis; 2 sisters, Eva Mae Spencer and Josephine Lewis; one daughter, Sandra Lewis.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 1221 Park Ave., Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Richard Smith will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at Prugh’s on Friday after 8:00 a.m. with the family receiving friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in his name.
