Obituary
Lisle Lee Barker, 39, of Danville, died en route to Monmouth, Ill., hospital Thursday afternoon after his car struck a power pole near Biggsville, Ill.
A Burlington railroad fireman, Barker was driving to work in Galesburg in his 1957 MG sports car.
David Hallam, acting Warren county coroner, held an inquest this morning and pronounced Barker’s death due to shock from crushing and internal injuries.
Officers said he passed a car but apparently turned too sharply to get back into his own lane of traffic. The car went out of control, rolled over and crashed against a powerline pole. Officers said that the 16-inch pole was broken. Barker was pinned in his upside-down car.
He was pronounced dead at a Monmouth hospital at 4:10 pm.
A former Burlingtonian, Barker was born July 21, 1921, at Yorktown, Ia., the son of Lloyd and Sally Penn Barker. He married the former Marjorie Cone here on July 30, 1946.
Barker served in the US Air Force during WWII. He was of the Methodist Faith and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen & Engineers and the VFW.
Surviving are his wife; his parents, of West Branch; three children, Cindy, Timothy and Kevin, all at home; a sister, Mrs. Donald Doyle of Danville; and two brothers, Gilbert of West Branch, and Kenneth of Burlington.
Services will be Saturday at 2 pm at the Elliott-Lunning chapel, the Rev. OC Huff officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
