Obituary
P. Melvin Leimer, 90, Sterling House, Burlington, died at 7:40 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Nov. 3, 1909, in Fruitland, Mo., he was the son of Theodore and Bertha Pfeiffer Leimer. On June 5, 1938, he married Margaret Lang in Old Appleton, Mo. She died Jan. 19, 2000. Mr. Leimer taught in rural schools for six years. He first taught high school in 1939 at Perryville, Mo. In 1950 he became a high school science teacher in Keokuk, then moved to a college science position at Southeastern Community College in Keokuk in 1953. In 1970, he accepted a science position at SCC's north campus in West Burlington, retiring in 1993. He was a 1923 graduate of Jackson High School in Jackson, Mo. He received his bachelor of science in education degree from Southeastern Missouri University in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and a master's degree from the University of Missouri in 1939. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, served as president of the church council for two years, and taught the Adult Forum for 15 years. He served on various SCC committees. He was chairman of East Perry Fair for two years, and was honored as grand marshal in 1987. He received the Burlington Faculty Achievement Award in May 1991. He served as president of the Keokuk Education Association and SCC Teacher Association in West Burlington. Survivors include two sons, Gerald W. Leimer of St. Paul, Minn., and Donald K. Leimer of Los Angeles; one daughter, Nancy S. Kuebler of Minnetonka, Minn.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irma Kasten of Jackson, and Nelda Ludwig of Pocahontas, Mo.; three brothers, Ervin Leimer of St. Louis, Tilman Leimer of Jackson, and Wilmer Leimer of Perryville; nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother. Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Leimer will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Donald Hoornstra officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been estalished for Messiah Lutheran Church or the Melvin and Margaret Leimer Endowed Nursing Scholarship through Southeastern Community College.
