Julijs Konrads Lacis, 98, of Des Moines, formerly of Burlington, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Born June 24, 1912, in Meirani, Latvia, he was the son of Andrievs and Emilija Kamols Lacis. In 1939, he married Anna Milija Dunkulis. Mr. Lacis farmed. He completed one year of college. He and his family fled Latvia during the war in 1944, lived in refugee camps in Germany, and moved to the United States in 1951. They were longtime residents of Burlington and Milwaukee, moving to West Des Moines in the early 1990s. He was a member of Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Survivors include one son, Andrew Lacis; two daughters, Liga Briedis and Biruta Lowther; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandchild, and two sisters. The funeral for Mr. Lacis will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Unity Lutheran Church in Des Moines, with Liga Briedis officiating. Visitation will follow at Latvian Society of Iowa Center. Burial will be Saturday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Memorials have been established for Iowa Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Latvian Society of Iowa and Hospice of Central Iowa.
