Obituary

Anna Lacis, 90, passed away at Kavanagh House on September 10, 2010. Anna was born in Gulbene, Latvia, on January 3, 1920. She married Julijs Konrads Lacis in 1939. Her family fled Latvia during the war in 1944, and lived in refugee camps in Germany before moving to the United States in 1951. They were long time residents of Burlington and Milwaukee, moving to West Des Moines in the early 90's. Anna is survived by her husband of 70 years; her son Andrew Lacis; daughters Liga Briedis and Biruta Lowther; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She is preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the Unity Lutheran Church, 1450 E. 33rd Street, Des Moines, with visitation following at the Latvian Society of Iowa Center. Burial will be at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Latvian Society of Iowa, or Hospice of Central Iowa.
