Alva "Al" Leland Landes, 85, of Burlington, died at 4:31 p.m. Monday, June 29, 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born November 8, 1923, in rural Danville, he was the son of Russell W. and Lucia A. Enslow Landes. On May 2, 1969, he married Bonnie B. Darrah in Hannibal, MO. Mr. Landes worked for 33 years as a salesman at Standard of Beaverdale. He owned several rental properties. He was a graduate of Denmark High School. He was a member of First Christian Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 150, and Moose Lodge No. 579. He enjoyed building and maintaining the family cabin on the river. Survivors include his wife; one son, Leland Landes of Grand Prairie, Texas; one stepson, Richard "Rick" Danielson of Burlington; one stepdaughter, Gail Nemeth of Burlington; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Julia Royer of Burlington, and Darlene Vorhies of Fairfield; and one brother, Donald Landes of rural West Point. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Landes will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
