Max I. Philpott, 82, 16 Richards Drive, Ft. Madison, died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Born Sept. 6, 1914, in Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of Raymond and Elizabeth Obermeier Philpott. On Jan. 11, 1942, he married Wanda M. Hippe in Burlington. Mr. Philpott was a World War II Army veteran. He retired in 1975 as a brakeman for Santa Fe Railroad with 30 years of service. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing antiques. He was a member of Santa Fe United Methodist Church of Fort Madison, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, AARP, Fort Madison Senior Citizens and United Transportation Union. Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Philpott of North Andover, Mass; one daughter, Sharon Haugen of Ames; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, L.E. Philpott of North Miami, Fla; one sister, Alberta Fox of Minnetonka, Minn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Sunday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will recieve friends from 7 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Philpott will be at 10;30 a.m. Monday at Santa Fe United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Crystal Oberheu officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Santa Fe United Methodist Chruch.
