Joseph Edward Baird, 73, 108 S. Gunnison, a retired Burlington police chief, died at 7:10 pm Friday, Dec. 27, in Mercy hospital.
He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born Feb 25, 1895, in Burlington son of Harry and Nellie Gerke Baird. No. 4, 1929, at Monmouth, Ill., he married Gladys Gurnee.
He served with the local police department for 24 years before his retirement in 1945. He was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Policement's Benefit Assn.
Surviving; The wife; two daughters, Mr.s Joseph (Phyllis) Waldorf, Burlington, Mrs. Gloria Schilling, Dubuque; one son Rober, New Brunswick, N.J.; eight grandchildren.
Services' 2 pm Tuesday, Prigh's chapel, Dr. G. Dempster Yinger; Aspen Grove cemetery.
