Marthella "Big D" Knox, 80, of Burlington, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at her home. Born June 9, 1930, in Casscoe, Ark., she was the daughter of Ben and Estelle Jemerson Stigger. On December 31, 1950, she married Willie Knox. Mrs. Knox was a graduate of Emmanuel High School in Arkansas. She worked with the disabled in Chicago, in the laundry at a nursing home in Grand Rapids, Mich., and as a waitress for many years. Mrs. Knox also was a nurse. She was a member of Faith Temple-Church of God in Christ. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards, blues music, game shows, fishing, going to yard sales, and was a Texas Rangers baseball fan. She loved to cook her big home-cooked meals, and loved all her grandchildren. Survivors include five sons, Larry Knox of Perry, Jerome Knox, Alfred Knox, Calvin Knox, and Danny Knox all of Burlington; one daughter, Patricia Knox of Burlington; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Bunns of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, her parents, six brothers, and one sister. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, where family will receive friends. The funeral service for Mrs. Knox will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with Elder Fred Starling officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
