Mrs. Dorothy V. Kemp, 93, of Burlington, Iowa died at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at Burlington Care Center.
Born July 30, 1922 in West Point, Iowa she was the daughter of Harry Robert and Leah Virginia (Jennings) Younk. On January 3, 1942 she married Leon G. Kemp. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1995.
Mrs. Kemp was an x-ray technician and went on to become the owner and operator of Kemp's Play-Time Preschool and Daycare. Her school was one of the first state licensed preschools in Iowa and became the largest children's daycare in southeast Iowa. She was appointed by Gov. Hughes and Gov. Ray to the Statehouse for Daycare Planning for Iowa, helping to write laws and regulations for state licensing. Mrs. Kemp also participated with AEYC - Area Education for Young Children. In addition, she also helped raise several foster children.
Mrs. Kemp was a member of First United Church of Christ and Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, canning and especially loved the outdoors and the River.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda (Larry) Turley of Burlington; one son, Dean (Maureen) Kemp of Burlington; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one step brother, Edgar Laue of West Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Alan Kemp; brother Keith Younk; three step brothers, Gifford, Gilbert and Wilbur Laue.
Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Friday, June 3rd, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.
The funeral service for Mrs. Kemp will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4th, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for children's charities.
