Services for Midshipman 2nd Class Steven James Kartel, 21, of the Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, N.Y., who died at North shore Medical Center, Manhasset, N.Y., Friday, Oct. 5, of injuries suffered in a traffic accident, will be held in Bethany Lutheran Church at a time to be announced. Dr. Robert Buhr will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established. Midshipman Kartel was born July 27, 1963, in Burlington, to Dr. Joseph G. and Juanita Stephen Kartel. He graduated from Burlington High School, where he had been an outstanding athlete, in 1981, and was accepted by the Merchant Marine Academy shortly after graduation. Midshipman Kartel was unmarried. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Surviving: His mother, 1315 Hedge Avenue; two brothers, Joseph G. III and Michael W. both of Burlington; and two sisters, Deborah Yacko, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Juli Ann Kartel, Iowa City.
