Robert Arthur Jones, Sr., 94, of Montrose, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at his home. Born April 1, 1917, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Albert and Mary Blaufaus Jones. On June 26, 1956, he married Irene Dorothy Wellman in Carthage, Ill. Mr. Jones and his family worked in the navigational rivers in the Midwest, and as a young man he moved tons of cargo and tied many ropes. He had his right leg amputated in 1937 in a tow boat accident at Lock 7 in Dresback, Minn. He enjoyed fixing mechanical problems on tow boats. He retired from boat work with the rank of Captain. He also worked factories, retiring in 1975. He was of the Catholic faith. Survivors include his wife; and one son, Robert Jones, Jr. of Montrose. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington. The funeral for Mr. Jones will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church in Burlington, with the Revs. David Wilkening and Tony Herold officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
