Mrs. Ernestine Martin-Babcock, 86, of Burlington, died at 11:58 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, at Great River Medical Center. Born September 4, 1925, in Davenport, she was the daughter of Gerhardt and Naomi Dethlefs Martin. On October 15, 1955, she married John L. Babcock in Davenport. Mrs. Babcock was a graduate of Davenport High School. She worked as a secretary for the Davenport Public School System and for Benner Tea Company, retiring in 1957. She was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ and the Ruth Circle, a life member of ESA and a member of Big River Sons Camping Club. She enjoyed cooking, baking, "handi-crafts". She loved baking cookies for her kids.
Survivors include her husband, John L. Babcock of Burlington; two sons, Alan (Linda) Babcock of Littleton, Colorado and David (Dana) Babcock of Danville; one daughter, Nancy (Tom) Jahncke of Lake Zurich, Illinois; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Sally Ann; and one brother Robert A. Martin. The funeral service for Mrs. Babcock will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 6th, in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Mark Schowalter will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 5th, in Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for St. Luke United Church of Christ.
