Phyllis Fern Johnson Burlington resident, died Monday, September 21, 2015 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa. She was born May 14, 1920 the daughter of Acel E. and Vera F. Mohrling Galbraith in Gladstone, Illinois. Phyllis married Lawrence K. Johnson January 15, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa. He died May 1, 1996. She was a homemaker, and also worked at Advance Ross for 18 years and McKesson Robbins in Burlington for 5 years.
Phyllis was an independent woman; she began working at Ross Manufacturing in the 1950’s where she organized fellow workers into a union and subsequently helped her husband Larry in organizing the city of Burlington bus drivers. For many years she helped in the care of Larry’s sisters. Helen Schwartz has been a close and unvarying friend for many years. Her sons agree she could not have been a better mother. She especially enjoyed vegetable gardening with her husband Larry. She was well traveled and traveled to France in her 90’s. She enjoyed going to Key West, FL and Colorado by herself to see her sons. Her sons were her life. She enjoyed theater and live entertainment. Phyllis also enjoyed CD music and shopping with her friends.
Survivors include two sons Keith C. (Amy) Johnson of Loveland, CO and Roger T. (Richard Vaillant) Johnson of Sugarloaf Shores, FL; two grandchildren, Laura Feland and Ann Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Lavern Galbraith.
Graveside Committal Services will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Chaplain Dean Graber will officiate. The family will be present to greet friends in Prugh’s Chapel on Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.
