Obituary
Robert Morgan James, age 87, of Haines City, FL, died Saturday, November 7, 2009, of kidney failure at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, FL. He was born on June 15, 1922, at West Liberty, Iowa, the son of Homer Frank James and Ethel Morgan James. He married Vera Walker on August 31, 1942. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations under George S. Patton. He was wounded in combat at the Moselle River Crossing in Eastern France on September 12, 1944, , with the shrapnel wounds resulting in paralysis. After discharge from an Army hospital in April, 1946, he returned to his home state of Iowa, being employed at the Des Moines County Health Center in Burlington, Iowa. During the Korean War, he was employed in the accounting department of the U.S. Army Ammunition Plant near Burlington. He served as Des Moines County Treasurer for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1981 due to health problems. He was a member of the Burlington Lions Club, and a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, where he served in many capacities, including treasurer. He was a lifetime member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Disabled Veterans Association, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Vera, after a marriage of 67 years; and three sons, Kerry of Houston, Texas, Richard of Meridian, Idaho, and Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A sister, Audrey Robbins of Grand Junction, Colorado; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by both his parents. Friends may call from noon until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 15th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. The memorial funeral service for Mr. James will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 16th, in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Trevor Davis officiating. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Inurn-ment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
