Ethel Mae Astfalk, 87, of Burlington, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington Born February 12, 1919 in Burlington, she was the daughter of William and Anna Marie Stodt Huppenbauer. On September 29, 1937, she married Edwin W. Astfalk. He died November 19, 1994. She worked as a retail clerk for JC Penney for 25 years. She also worked 4 years at Spurgeons and several months for Montgomery Wards. She was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church. She was a member of the RR Auxiliary and Hawkeye Natives. She enjoyed playing bingo and reading. Survivors include one son, William Astfalk of West Burlington; one daughter, Mary Ann Porter of Burlington; two grandchldren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Kelso of Burlington; nieces; nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. The Rosary will be recited in Prugh's Chapel on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. The Very Rev. Fr. Gerald Stouvenel will be the celebrant, with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide the music. A memorial has been established for Great River Medical Center Hospice.
