Howard W. Humphrey, 79, of Burlington, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 17, 2005 at his home. Born February 13, 1926, in Salem, Iowa, he was the son of Bert Litton and Maggie Hudson Humphrey. On June 4, 1969, he married Billie Yvonne Walker in Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Humphrey was an inspector for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 20 years and retired from the Burlington Public School System. He was a World War II Navy veteran, attaining the rank of seaman first class, and was a Coast Guard veteran. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed reading and traveling. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Glenda Lowry of Bloomington, Illinois, and Connie Sue Walker of Chicago; one son, Bryan Humphrey of Burlington; two stepsons, Terry Ryner of Burlington, and Jerry Ryner of West Burlington; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, one granddaughter and one nephew. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday at Prugh's, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Humphrey will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel, with Pastor Charles Stevens officiating. Burial with military rites being conducted by VFW Posts 10102 & 9162, American Legion Post 52, Marine Corp League and AmVets Post 29 will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
