Jerry Gordon Hummell, 75, of Burlington, died Monday, October 30, 2017.
Born July 30, 1942, in Burlington, he was the son of Donald Gordon and Mary Malena Dearlove Hummell. On August 18, 1968, he married Jane Downes in Rozetta, IL.
He worked as the projector operator for the drive-in, at IAAP, at Freeman Resins for over 20 years, and for Burlington Community School District as a bus driver. In addition, he was the owner and operator of Jerry's Stained Glass Designs.
He graduated from Burlington High School in 1960. He attended SCC, receiving an AA degree and graduating in 1992. He later attended Western Illinois University.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving primarily in Korea as a photographer from June 21, 1960 until June 20, 1963.
He was a member and Deacon at Oak Street Baptist Church and assisted his wife in teaching the 2-3 year-old Sunday School classes for over 20 years. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He enjoyed anything regarding military history, particularly Civil War history due to his grandfather's involvement. He was a member of the Shakespeare Club for three years as well as a member of the Burlington Stained Glass Club. He made and repaired stained glass professionally, and made vases, plates and other artwork pieces. He was a diehard Cubs and Bears fan.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Jason Gordon Hummell of Burlington; one brother Fred Hummell of Burlington; one grandson, Evan Green; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Downes and Marie Dilts both of Burlington, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pat.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Prugh's Chapel.
The memorial service for Hummell will be 10:00 am Friday, November 3, 2017, at Prugh's Chapel with Reverend Gary Karas officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Oak Street Baptist Church following the burial.
A memorial has been established for the Oak Street Baptist Church Deacon's Fund.
