Katharine Hulen Pierrot, 92, died peacefully on Saturday, August 27th, in Virginia. She was born on February 9, 1919, in Columbia, Missouri to Ross G. and Emma Cecil Brown. She was married to Dr. Carl S. Hulen of Centralia, Missouri from 1940-1983, and to Charles Pierrot of Wever, Iowa, from 1988-1999. Katharine was an early organizer and Missouri chairman of the "March of Dimes" campaign against Polio, and a perennial Cub Scout den mother. She was a member of PEO and Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, Iowa. Katharine and Carl built and operated Holiday Inns in Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois. She was judged to be an outstanding seamstress and quilter. Both husbands preceded her in death. Two brothers, Dr. Ross G. Brown of Columbia, Missouri, and Donald H. Brown of Terrace Park, Ohio, survive her. Surviving are her children, Mason R. Hulen and his wife Annie Laurie of Waynesboto, Virginia, and Marjorie Ann Smith and her husband Jim Smith of Danville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Carl N. Hulen of Keauhou, Hawaii, Mary Katharine Froehlich of Waynesboro, Virginia, Daniel R. Hulen of Richmond, Virginia, and Evan Smith of Burlington, Iowa; and eleven great-grandchildren. Following private interment in Aspen Grove Cemetery, memorial services for Katharine Hulen Pierrot will be held on Saturday, September 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Trevor Davis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Katharine's name for Grace United Methodist Church, 1100 Angular St., Burlington, Iowa 52601.
