Gene Howard Bernhart, 63, of Burlington, died 3:50 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012, in his home.
Born September 26, 1948 in Burlington, he was the son of Glen Howard and Marjorie (Marshall) Bernhart. He married Doris Bowman on November 7, 1969 in Burlington. She died November 8, 2000. Gene worked as a security guard on Line A at I.A.A.P. He then worked for US Gypsum and in later years he owned and operated a cab company and eventually returned to I.A.A.P from 2001 until 2004. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed gambling, playing BINGO with his wife and driving for the cab company. He also enjoyed going to the movies on Saturdays. He was a people person and was true to his word. His joy in life was his children and his grandbabies.
Survivors include two daughters, Roxan (Scott) Garrett of Burlington and Cindy (John) Bragg both of Burlington; a son, Keven Bernhart of Burlington; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters, Sonda Blanco and Judy Huntington both of Burlington, Bonnie Henderson of West Burlington, and Janet Murphy of Texas; two brothers, Terry Bernhart and Jim Bernhart both of Burlington; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one son Donnie in infancy.
The funeral service for Mr. Bernhart will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24th in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Terry Vance will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 23rd in Lunning Chapel. A memorial has been established for the family.
